A647 Bus Priority Corridor - New information available

As part of the Connecting Leeds project, Leeds City Council are transforming travel by making a range of transport improvements in key locations across the city. Improving our bus network and developing park and ride sites, is an important part of our plans. Giving buses priority along key routes will make journeys quicker, easier and more appealing, helping to tackle congestion, air quality and health issues.

After consulting on travel improvement plans along this route in 2018, Leeds City Council appointed BAM Nuttall to undertake construction, along the A647 between Bradford and Leeds, via Stanningley, Bramley and Armley.

Following feedback the initial start date was postponed to allow several design changes to be considered. We can confirm that the first works started w/c 9th November. This work is to remove the central islands on Armley Road. Work will also start on the proposed bus lane (on Armley Road).

The key benefits of the scheme include:

  • Reduced travel time for buses and general traffic
  • More reliable bus journey times
  • A safer and better quality environment for pedestrians & cyclists
  • The key works along the corridor, both east and westbound include:

  • Bus lanes along Bradford Road between Dawsons Corner and Thornbury Gyratory
  • Bus lane westbound on Armley Road
  • The conversion of the existing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes along Stanningley Bypass and Stanningley Road to a bus lane
  • New pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes
  • Improvements to various signalised junctions to improve crossing facilities and junction performance to allow bus priority, including Ledgard Way junction, Pickering Street junctions, Swinnow Lane junction and Hough Lane junction
  • Introduction of a bus gate at the end of the new bus lane on Stanningley Road to give bus priority
  • The relocation and reorganisation of bus stops along the corridor to improve the passenger experience
  • You can find further details and plans for Ledgard Way and Armley Road on our project update page . Plans for the other sections will continue to be added as they become available. Sign up for project updates from Bam and Connecting Leeds to be kept informed.
